Not too long ago, I had an eye examination.  I like to make sure I’m seen at least every other year.  If for nothing else, I like to make sure no early stage of glaucoma is coming on.  As usual, my ophthalmologist flipped out the lights on us and then flashed the tiny alphabet soup chart on the wall and told me to read the third line from the bottom.  To that, I said to her – I think I can read the bottom line.

I still miss playing basketball.  I miss feeling faster than most other players I played with.  I miss that feeling of having played for thirty minutes, running hard and wearing down the other players and still feeling like I could run like that for another hour.  I think that’s what I miss the most about having to give up running sports when I broke my leg (link).  Oh, I was never good enough, (or even brave enough), to try out for the high school team, but leave me unguarded in the three point range in our industrial and church leagues and I was liable to drop half a dozen three pointers in on you within the first quarter.  I just loved to shoot.

A few hours ago, (when I began writing this), I had just returned from picking up my wife at the airport.  One of the ‘drive-home topics’ naturally was the traditional “how was your flight” conversation.  She spoke of flying over the big first major storm of the season and later, as I watched the video footage of the blizzard in Minnesota, I was reminded of the time we got snowbound in Puerto Rico.

Very many times as I am writing these little true life stories, I am hit sideways with a new memory.  It sometimes makes me believe that all of our memories are neatly tucked away inside the many whorls of our brain.  Wouldn’t it be a great thing to be able to tap into them or download them onto a flash drive so that they could be replayed on your video screen?  This is a short story, but it’s a very cute one, a memory I’m glad that popped out of one of those brain whorls.
